Giyu advised Tanjiro to seek training from Sakonji Urokodaki at the foot of Sagiri Mountain. Under Sakonji’s guidance, Tanjiro grew stronger and learned sword skills and the Water Breathing technique.

Who Is Sakonji Urokodaki The Former Water Hashira?

In the second episode of Demon Slayer, Sakonji Urokodaki is introduced as the former Water Harshira and the sensei of Giyu Tomioka, the current Water Harshira. Sakonji Urokodaki created the Water Breathing technique, which was later used by Tanjiro Kamado, Giyu Tomioka, and Sabito. In episode 20, Giyu demonstrates the 11th form of Water Breathing, “Death Calm,” by defeating Lower Rank 5 Rui.

Sakonji imprisoned the Hand Demon on Mount Fujikasen for over 47 years. The demon had a grudge against Sakonji Urokodaki and had killed thirteen of his disciples, including Sabito and Makomo. Tanjiro, using a technique learned from Sakonji Urokodaki, defeats the Hand Demon, marking his advancement as a Demon Slayer.

What did Tanjiro learn at Sankonji Urokodaki?

After receiving letters from Giyu (Water Hashira) explaining the circumstances of Tanjiro and his sister, Sakonji Urokodaki sets off to find them. While searching for the siblings, Sakonji Urokodaki comes across Tanjiro, who attempts to kill a demon with a knife.

Sankonji Urokodaki told him that the knife was not enough to kill him. He had to figure out the way by himself. In episode 2 of season 1, Sakonji Urokodaki begins to criticize Tanjiro for his weak resolve to take immediate action. He suggests if Nezuko goes on a rampage and eats someone, he should be the one to kill her and then kill himself.

While Tanjiro struggles to kill the demon, Sakonji Urokodak buries all the victims and prays. Before accepting Tanjiro as his disciple, Urokodaki tests his suitability to become a Demon Slayer. He suggests him to bring his sister and follow him. After successfully following him to his place, Urokodaki told him that the test was about to begin now.

Soon after successfully passing the test, Sakonji takes him as his discipline and explains a few things about him and a way to become a member of Demon Slayer Crops (passing the final selection exam.)

Just like his previous disciples, Urokodaki trains Tanjiro for the final selection exam and checks if he is worthy of being one of them.

He explains and teaches him how to climb the mountain successfully without putting stress on the body. He also teaches a proper way to breathe, even in places with thin air. To improve Tanjiro’s endurance and body stance while battling, Sankonji Urokodaki often fights with him.

Eventually, after a year, Tanjiro had learned everything Sankonji Urokodaki could teach him. However, Urokodaki suggested to continue work on the things he taught him.

During the final selection test, Tanjiro encounters Hand Demon, the same demon imprisoned by Sakonji Urokodaki a long back. To make Urokodaki pay for capturing him, the Hand Demon killed thirteen of his disciples, and Tanjiro was the next. Before Hand Demon does anything, Tanjiro uses the first form of the Water Breathing technique, which he learned from Sakonji Urokodaki. He successfully sliced the head of the demon and later passed the test.

Tanjiro mastered all the forms of Water Breathing techniques and utilised them successfully throughout the show. Sakonji Urokodaki is the cultivator of the Water Breathing technique and taught it successfully to all of his disciples.
